Japanese old "SUISEKI" scholars stone, indoor viewing stone, Zen garden stone, with a hand carved pedestal H4.7 x W8.3in / 12 x 21cm

"水石Suiseki" is a Japanese culture or hobby of viewing stones indoors.
This culture came from China in the 12th century, and getting popular among noble and samurai society.
They preferred and collected stones which resembles mountain and made a small landscape scenery in a tray filled with water. It has something in common with "bonsai" and "suiseki" are also displayed in "床の間tokonoma", an alcove in a traditional Japanese room where art pieces are displayed.

This suiseki is called as "幸太郎石 Kotaro ishi" mined in steep mountainous area in Hokkaido. The name of Kotaro is from a man, indigenous people, who lived there and made a living by selling suiseki. Due to the steep and inaccessible nature of the stream where this stone is found, it is rare and few in number. This stone perfectly recreates the atmosphere of a deep mountain valley, making it almost feel as if a rapid stream is flowing beneath it. With its vertical cliffs, countless fine wrinkles, pools known as "tamari," and faded surface, it possesses many of the qualities of a prized suiseki. The wooden pedestal was carved to fit exactly the bottom of the stone and even its chiseled marks are beautiful.
