Japanese old low foldable screen "byobu" covered with kanji calligraphy papers collages, Japanese classic paper partition, H21.5×W67.9in
This is a piece of furniture called a 屏風Byobu in Japan. It is a type of furniture used to partition and decorate a room. The structure consists of a wooden frame with several sheets of very old paper and other materials attached and folded together.
Believed to have been introduced from China, the folding screen has a long history and was already in existence as a tool to protect against the wind during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) in China. In Japan, by the Muromachi period (1336-1573 B.C.), many ink paintings and extremely colored screens were produced.
Just placing a folding screen can change the atmosphere of a space at once, and it is convenient because it can be folded for storage.
The owner of this byobu reproduced it by collages of calligraphy papers. The original painting, a short and long curtain is waving with background of golden clouds and navy water surface, can be partly seen through. Calligraphy papers are thought to be a sort of contract or agreement in village made at least 180 years. Some papers contain a series of villagers signatures and their stamps.

condition...
It is in good condition, but there are small scratches and dirt due to aging. There is peeling lacquer on the wooden frame. The paper is also old and has some peeling, but this is not a problem for use.
I list antiques that sometimes have chips, rubbings and cracks
as they are very old antiques so please check the images and understand the current
condition before buying.
