Japanese Makie Black Lacquer wooden box for letter container with a brass emblem of a goat and grapes from Aesop's fables, W10.8×D8.7in

This is a unique black lacquer box from a temple. Usually lacquer boxes in temples have family crests or arabesque patterns on their surfaces. Yet a monk made a craftsman make boxes which imply Aesop's fables he likes. Though he had several boxes, this is only one left, the goat and grapes. He loved telling stories to neighbor children and this box made chance to begin the story which teaches moral easily.

As a craft, shape is different from basic sutra boxes, slightly bulging bottom with beautiful side curves. A thin lid is well balanced with a bit thick body and metal engraving of a goat and grapes gives fresh impression to black lacquer.
