Japanese Lacquer Tray, Obon Black & Gold Family Crest with wooden box (17.9x12.6in/45.5×32cm)

This is a tray made of wood and black lacquer. This lacquer is called as "越前塗 Echizen nuri", which was one of the biggest lacquer crafts in Japan. Echizen is an old name for Fukui prefecture along Japan sea. 

The size is large and the condition is beautiful, almost unused. It is ready for use.
The family crest is painted in gold in the center. The owner's name is written in gold on the back. 

This is a family crest called "丸に柏 Maru ni Kashiwa," and it features a design of oak leaves inside a circle. In Japan, it was customary to place oak leaves under offerings to the gods. Also, because the leaves do not fall off until the new leaves appear in spring, it is said to represent "an unbroken line of generations" and "the family will continue," and was favored by many nobles and samurai families with the hope of prosperity for their descendants.
