Japanese furniture old wooden HIBACHI Nagahibachi brazier charcoal Fire Holder tea making table cabinet three drawers W27.2/W69cm 1880s.
This Japanese furniture is called "長火鉢Naga-hibachi (long brazier)".
This long brazier frequently appears in 落語Rakugo stories. It is an indispensable tool in an Edo house. The long brazier was a heating device using charcoal, but it also had various other functions. It was used to boil water and heat sake. The drawers were also used as dryers to store seaweed and cigarettes.
A top panel that can be used like a table is called a "猫板nekoita(cats boards)". The reason for this name seems to be that it was the best place to stay.
The grain of the wood is beautiful, and the very heavy zelkova wood is thickly used and the corners are carefully assembled. It is very sturdy and the furniture is highly precise, showing the high level of skill of Japanese craftsmen in the past.
It is coated with red and black lacquer. Although it is red, it is not bright red, but has become a very cool color over time.
The interior is enclosed in copper, and ashes and charcoal can be placed, and a kettle can be set to boil water.
Very comfortable and warm. In very good condition.
