Japanese furniture antique orchid pot with three legs black gold, "Rakuyaki hachi", pottery pot with gold painting, H2.7×4.1in/H6.8×10.3cm.

The most popular and expensive of all flower pots was the "Raku ware pot. Raku ware is widely known as tea bowls, and Raku-yaki pots are made from the same clay. The great advantage of this clay is that it is extremely lightweight and durable. Moreover, as long as it is not covered with a glaze, it has good air permeability, allowing plants to keep their roots in good condition.

These orchid pots were kept by collectors and never used for planting. The golden color of the top and legs contrasts sharply with the plants above. This shape of pot is for a certain species of orchid called "rohdea japonica."

While orchids are popular and often chosen as gifts for special events, small wild orchids have been a major object of collection and cultivation since the mid-Edo period (early 18th century). After the mid-Edo period (early 18th century), the collection and cultivation of small wild orchids became popular, and ceramic plant pots were developed to place the plants in the house. As long as the plants were placed outdoors in ceramic pots, there was little interest in the pots themselves. However, two problems arose: how to place plants inside the house? One was to make the plants smaller, and the other was to dress up the pots. Bonsai was one of the solutions, but the bonsai chose shallow pots and dishes to minimize the roots. Therefore, there is no space to show the roots. On the other hand, flowering plants preferred deep pots, and people competed aesthetically with each other in the combination of plant and pot.
