Japanese furniture 1880s Antique wood Hibachi brazier charcoal Fire Holder with Makie of quail birds and plum blossom design 15.4in/39cm.
It has long been an important piece of winter furniture in Japan. The brazier has been in use since the Nara period (710-794).
Made from a single large tree, they are large and beautiful. The inside is covered with copper. The outside is covered with a delicate lacquer and maki-e technique called maki-e. Some of the shells are inlaid with mother-of-pearl inlay and shine beautifully when the light hits them. There are numerous areas where the shells and lacquer have peeled off over time. However, there are no problems with use and it can be used immediately.
The motifs are birds, plum blossoms, trees, and flowers such as dandelions. The design is very elaborate with maki-e even on the top. The bold gold color of the tree trunk is beautiful and the bird's feathers are delicate. The arrangement is unique and interesting, with different impressions depending on where you look.
Some of the shells have peeled off and the lacquer is peeling. Please see photos. There are no major cracks or other damage to the wood and it is ready to use.
