This tea kettle is a custom-made piece, featuring a relief design that incorporates the Zen phrase and signature of a monk from the Daitoku-ji sect.

It also boasts a remarkably beautiful and unique lid design; the knob is crafted to resemble a thread spool. The marbled pattern on the lid is also beautiful.


The inscription is a calligraphy piece by a Zen monk. It was written by Hosoai Katsudō (1910–2005), who served as the head priest of Ryūgen-in, a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, and was renowned as a monk-tea master with a deep understanding of the tea ceremony. His calligraphy, including works displayed on hanging scrolls used in tea ceremonies, is highly regarded.


The inscription reads “Shourei” (Pine Ridge). This is based on the Zen phrase “ 冬嶺秀孤松 Tou-rei Ko-sho hiidezu” (A solitary pine stands out on a winter ridge). This phrase originates from a saying by the Chinese poet Tao Yuanming.

The surface has been treated with minerals to inhibit rust formation, making it resistant to the spread of rust. Please ensure it is thoroughly dried after use.
