FINE! Japanese Antiques Lost Wax Bronze Basin 1890s weight shaped with dragon relief, SUIBAN, metal craft For IKEBANA W15×D10.6in/W38×D27cm

This is a basin called as "水盤"" Suiban , a sort of vase used in Japanese flower arrangement, ikebana, and also used to show "suiseki", scholar's stone. 

The distinctive shape originates from a traditional Japanese weight (fun-do) used historically to measure the weight of gold and silver for currency exchange. The reliefs scattered throughout the piece feature a collection of auspicious treasures , which include jewels and accessories, scrolls, spices, a mallet that summons good fortune when swung, and a cloak that protects the wearer from harm. The motif of interlocking circles is called the "Shippo Mon" (Seven Treasures pattern). Its form not only symbolizes various treasures, but the continuous pattern also represents infinite connection and perpetuity, while the circular shape signifies perfection and harmony. 

This is a luxurious piece adorned with decoration everywhere except the interior. Intricate wave patterns are carved into the surface, and the base features a dragon relief set against a cloud background. While this level of elaborate ornamentation is commonly seen in ceramic pieces that are made colorful with paint and glaze, it is a rarity in cast metalware. The motifs and craftsmanship suggest the piece dates to the Meiji era (1868 - 1912).
