Japanese Antique wooden Hibachi brazier charcoal Fire Holder and kettle stand set with carving Kanji 寿 congratulations dark brown D11.4in.
This is a very old hibachi, hand-carved from a single tree. This is called a 火鉢hibachi, and it is used for heating, boiling water, and simple cooking by burning charcoal over the ashes inside.
It has been one of the most important pieces of furniture for winter in Japan for a long time. It has been in use since the Nara period (710-794). It is made from one large tree and is very large and beautiful. The inside is covered with copper.
The entire outside of this brazier is painted with dark brown lacquer, giving it a cool aged look. It is unique in that it is carved with the Kanji character for "寿KOTOBUKI (longevity)" and patterns like arabesque and octopus.
The meaning of "Kotobuki" is congratulations and longevity.
The arabesque pattern has been popular in Japan for a long time. The arabesque pattern has been popular in Japan since ancient times, and is thought to have the meaning of "longevity and prosperity" because of the way the vines of the plant grow long and uninterrupted in all directions. In addition, the octopus, with its eight legs, is also associated with the end of the world, making it a very auspicious set of patterns. In the Edo period (1603-1868), it was popular to use these kinds of jokes as patterns.
The set also includes a kettle stand made of cast iron, called a 五徳Gotoku. This can be used with a kettle or tea kettle on top of it while it is placed in the charcoal. This is a great value set that can be used right away.
