Japanese antique watercolor painting scroll of three nobles by Nangaku imitation, KAKEJIKU with BOX in 1900s Kanji signature H72in/H183cm.

This is a portrait depicting three nobles enjoying a poetry contest, a popular pastime among Heian period aristocrats. The painting is filled with a cheerful atmosphere, with all three nobles wearing smiles. They seem to play "Renga" , a genre of Japanese linked verse, in which two or more poets collaborate to create a longer poem. 　
　A short poem slip with the first verse is placed on the tatami mat, and a young man is reciting it, while an older man seems to be responding with the second verse. Judging from everyone's laughter, it's possible the young man recited a love poem to a young woman, and before she could reply with the second verse, the older man quickly added his own, teasing the young man.
　There is a signature and a stamp of "南岳 Nangaku" (1767-1813) who was a prominent student of Maruyama Okyo, the founder of the Maruyama school of painting, and was considered one of Okyo's ten most accomplished disciples. This work was painted in the Meiji era in imitation of him.
