The motif of this painting is "高砂 Takasago", one of the Noh plays. It is a very festive Noh story of love between a husband and wife, longevity, and celebration of human life.

About stories...
友成Tomonari, the priest of Aso Shrine, was waiting for someone at the seaside. Then an elderly couple with a pure appearance appeared. He asks them about the pine tree under which they are sweeping the shade of the pine tree.
The old couple begins to talk to him. They explained and praised the pine tree as a sacred tree and a couple with another pine tree, using the example of Japanese poetry, which has been cherished by people for many years.
They went on to explain that Japanese poetry flourishes because everything, including plants and trees, are filled with the spirit of song, and that the evergreen pine tree, which is 1,000 years old, is especially worthy of celebration.
Eventually, the old couple told him that they were the incarnation of the "couple's pine tree," and promising to meet again in Sumiyoshi, they boarded a small boat on the shore of the evening waves and disappeared into the sea, leaving the wind to carry them away.
