These are called stacked boxes and have long been used in Japan as containers for food.
It is said that the 重箱jubako first appeared in the Muromachi period (1333-1573), but it was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that it became commonplace. In particular, samurai families and feudal lords used to carry dishes in maki-e lacquer-work stacked boxes when they went "hunting" or "cherry blossom viewing. Therefore, the quality of maki-e on these old stacked boxes is very high, and you will be surprised at the delicacy of the maki-e when you see them up close.
The overall motif of the box is an old pine tree which is a highly revered symbol in art and landscaping, conveying deep philosophical meaning. The pine's primary symbolism is longevity and endurance. Being an evergreen, its needles stay green through winter, symbolizing eternal youth and resilience. An old pine with a weathered, gnarled trunk and stretching branches embodies profound dignity and nobility. Having stood for centuries, it signifies an unchanging spiritual foundation in traditional arts such as Noh, Sumi-e, gardens.
The traditionally deformed form of the pine is finely drawn using the makie (gold lacquer) and raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) techniques. A dynamic pine design is painted on each of the four sides, but the design on one side connects seamlessly with the pine motif on the lid. Upon opening the lid, the interior is revealed to be coated in a vibrant red lacquer, which dramatically enhances the visual splendor of the contents.
Two lids come and they can make a pair of two tiered boxes.
There are some repaired marks and also some tiny peelings and chipping as shown in pictures. Yet there is no major damage and it can be used immediately.
