Japanese antique pottery "Bizen ware" Hidasuki flower vase 1970s Beautiful earth color no glazed with a box H7.1×3.9in/H18×10cm

Bizen Pottery, known as Bizenyaki, is a pottery produced in Okayama Prefecture.
From the Kofun Period (mid 3rd century to 7th century) to the Heian Period (794 to 1185), kilns were scattered throughout the area where Bizen ware, called Sue ware, originated. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), brown pottery, as we know it today, began to be fired. This firing method allows sufficient oxygen to enter the kiln, and is characterized by the warm color of the pottery. Since it is fired hard without glaze, the original beauty of the clay is beautiful. Another reason for its popularity is that the color changes in the kiln, and no two pieces are alike. It is said that the more the pot is used, the more the color changes without becoming boring.

This vase has a typical pattern of Bizen called as "Hidasuki" which is a unique kiln transformation in Bizen ware where rice straw is wrapped around the pottery before firing. When the straw burns, it reacts with the iron in the clay, creating reddish-brown patterns resembling a tied sash. No two patterns are the same, and it is a prized characteristic that highlights the natural beauty of Bizen ware. The shape is a 'tokkuri' type, resembling a Japanese sake bottle, and its narrow opening is perfect for displaying a few stems of natural grasses or branches.

A signature of a craftsman is at the bottom and stored in a dedicated wooden box.
