Japanese antique plate porcelain set of 5 old KUTANI ware dishes, Chinese Red Gold hermit painting tableware EDO Meiji 1870s 4.9in/12.5cm.

This is a beautiful 九谷Kutani ware dish set of five, made in late edo~Meiji era.
This is a reprint of a piece of porcelain made in the 1700s called "古九谷Old-Kutani". At that time, Kutani ware had different characteristics depending on the kiln.
It was made by a master craftsman called 九谷庄三Kutani Shoza (1816-83). It is characterized by gold lines on a precise red ground, which is characteristic of Kutani, and by the gorgeous use of colors such as red, blue, green, yellow, white, brown, and gold.
The glazes are fired at different temperatures for different colors, so each piece has to be re-fired many times before it is complete.
And this early work of Shoza Kutani is elegant. Overall, the colors have deepened with age and have an elegant appearance. The atmosphere is very different from new Kutani.
The clay on the reverse side is also different from modern mass-produced pieces, and has a pale color.
The color of the clay on the back is exquisitely beautiful, even pink.
The gold color is not gaudy, but blends in well with the overall appearance.

The motif is a hermit-like figure relaxing and reading a book, surrounded by plants such as bamboo. The eyes, nose, and mouth of the face are purposely left out. This allows the figure and the landscape to merge into a single design. The lack of overdrawing also makes for an interesting design that stirs the imagination.
Handwritten signature of Shoza Kutani and the Kutani seal are engraved on the reverse side.
