Japanese antique painting hanging scroll of water color Kimono woman with old silk, KAKEJIKU with wooden box 1800s H80.7 x W21.7in
This is called KAKEJIKU a hanging scroll, and is a calligraphy or oriental painting on silk or paper.
In Japan, masters store various types of hanging scrolls. And he hangs a drawing scroll which represents the season and calligraphy scrolls which implies his feelings or message to his guests.
Another good point is that it can be rolled up and stored compactly.
There is a genre of painting called 美人画bijin-ga.
Bijin-ga refers to paintings that emphasize the beauty of women. It started with 浮世絵ukiyoe in the Edo period (1603-1867) and continued to be painted in large numbers from the end of the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa period (1926-1989).
This one depicts a young woman in Kimono fluttering in the wind. Maple leaves are also swirling and chrysanthemum flowers are drawn on kimono, so it's likely autumn.
The silk fabric around her is a wonderful combination that perfectly matches the atmosphere. The colorful stripes have discolored with age, creating an elegant atmosphere.
The signature is written in Kanji characters as "華堂 Kado" . Kado was born in 1802 and studied painting in Kyoto. He was hired as an official painter by the daimyo of the Owari Domain due to his exceptional skill.
There are tears where the scroll rod meets the fabric, but the back has been reinforced. There are some stains and wrinkles as shown in pictures.
