Japanese antique mini sharp eyes DARUMA doll wood slab Burl Sculpture, OMAMORI ZEN master, buddhist monk hand craft art H3.3in/H8.5cm

This is a very small 達磨 Daruma doll. Hand-carved to preserve the natural shape of the wood. Though small in size, upon closer look, its sharp eyes gaze at you, revealing superb craftsmanship.
The aged color and beautiful wood grain create a very serene atmosphere. It can just about stand on its own, but it was not made to be displayed upright.
It is one of those carved by Japanese artisans in the Shikoku region long ago. This size was meant to be carried carefully, like a talisman.

The motif, Daruma, refers to the monk who brought Buddhism from India to China. Though a Zen master, in Japan he is often depicted as a character with a uniquely approachable expression.
This piece is carved using tree roots and bark.
The motif is the Daruma doll, famous among Buddhists. It has a very cool vibe and comes highly recommended.
