Japanese antique MAKIE fine lacquer incense holder with Rimpa's gold paintings of maple leaves and water, H1.9 x W 4.5in
This small black lacquered wood round case is made as an incense holder. In tea ceremony, there is a scene where a host shows incense which is burnt in charcoal to guests. A host put pieces of incense, piece of precious wood or paste, in this case then hands it over to guests.
This incense holder has beautiful gold painting of a scenery with running water and maple leaves turning to red. Symbolically depicted water is from Rimpa school of Japanese traditional painting which began in 17th century. This can be the best incense holder in autumn. Inside is also lacquered with a technique of spreading gold and polishing.
