This is called a お椀 owan, and these are bowls.
In Japan, it is a container used to hold food, such as soup.
It is an item used in high-class Japanese restaurants.
It is also used in Tea ceremony 茶懐石"Chakaiseki".
The base is made by carving wood and lacquered black outside and inside. Though it looks just plain black bowl, beautiful picture in gold emerge from the steam as its lid opened. A pair of sparrows is flying over dandelion inside of the lid and bush clovers at the bottom appears in soup. It is recommended to pour clear soup with very little in it.
