These brass vases were displayed in pairs in front of the principal Buddha statues in temples. They were made at the end of the Edo period.
They originated in the Heian period (9th to 12th centuries), when esoteric Buddhism was practiced and where graceful curves and balance were emphasized. From the Heian period onwards, Buddhist altars began to be decorated with more elaborate ornamentation.
The deep gold color that has changed over time creates a cool atmosphere.
The lion carvings on both sides are beautiful and can be removed.
There is another identical piece on display.
