Japanese antique hanging scroll of water color painting, Kyoto Kamogawa in snow, with signature, early 1900s H78.3×14.6in / H199x37cm
This hanging scroll has a Japanese water color painting for river side of Kamogawa in Kyoto. The painter named "平井楳仙 Hirai Baisen" born in 1889, set his view point in Kawabata street just along Kamogawa river looking the left bank. In his time, the street across from Kawabata street was crowded with three- and four-story wooden buildings, each housing numerous restaurants and bars. Wooden buildings are now a rarity, but this painting provides a vivid glimpse into the past. Even though there is no wooden bridge left there, mountains are exactly as they were. It looks cold and lonely with all the snow, but it makes people excited thinking about the warm food and people on the other side of the bridge.
The name and stamp of the painter is on the left bottom. There are stains and spots on all over the scroll.
