This is one of the deities familiarly known as Hotei-san in Japan.
This figurine is a unique item featuring a pouch-shaped compartment where coins can be placed.
Originally, however, he is said to have been modeled on a legendary Chinese Zen monk with a large belly who always walked around town receiving alms and carrying all his belongings in a large bag.
He is said to have had the magical power to make people feel calm and content.
He was always surrounded by children and remains beloved by people with many legends.

The expression on this doll vividly conveys the monk's aura. The look radiating across its entire face is truly a symbol of good fortune.

An antique Bizen ware piece, crafted from the late Edo period into the Meiji era. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice repair marks around the knee area.
