Japanese antique 1950s wooden tub large storage "OKE/bucket" with bamboo belt, barrel, MINGEI, farm appliance, H7.9×20.9in/H20×53cm.

This is a container made of wood and bamboo called a Oke (bucket/tub). 桶 Oke were one of the indispensable tools for daily life in the Edo period. They were also used for washing clothes and for washing vegetables and seafood. Besides, it is also deeply related to fermentation, one of the distinctive aspects of Japanese food culture. Miso, sake, soy sauce, etc. were fermented in large vats like this one. Unlike metal containers that are hermetically sealed, vats breathe. It is thought that this allowed a greater variety of good bacteria to grow in these vats.
In the world of tea ceremony, ashes used in winter are dyed with tea and dried in such vats for storage.

It has become cool with the used and aged atmosphere. There are some small holes and discoloration of the wood, but no major damage.
