Japanese antique 1920s plates, bowl set with bird pomegranate SETO ware Japan Folk Crafts vessel/ Tea Ceremony, sweet container, Salad bowl.
This lovely deep bowl from the Koharuka Kiln, which has been in existence since the Edo period, was highly praised by Soetsu Yanagi (1889-1961), a leading advocate of the folk art movement. Known as 瀬戸 Seto ware, it has a history of 1,000 years.
It is covered with a feldspar glaze like 志野 Shino ware, in which a small bird and a boxwood are represented in inscriptions, accented by a red boxwood glaze.
The glaze is characterized by “貫入 kannyu” (penetration) throughout, and its expression has deepened with age.
This was originally used in tea ceremonies and when entertaining people, with sweets in a bowl and a set of serving dishes.
The plates come in a set of five. Each plate is handmade, so the painting on each plate is slightly different.
The plates come in a wooden box and are recommended as a gift.
