This is a New Year's table set, made of fine wood and lacquer. There are some repairs on the back of the bento box and sake cups, but overall the set is in good condition and ready to use.
It comes complete with a low pedestal table called a お膳OZEN, a set of sake pots and cups called お屠蘇OTOSO three sake cups, a bento box called 重箱JUBAKO and small plates.
It is handmade in gold with a design of pine trees and cranes.
This combination of pine trees and cranes has been very popular in Japan for a long time.
In Japan, it has been used for New Year's and other festive occasions. One reason is that these plants have a vitality that can be felt even in winter.
Pine trees, in particular, have been considered the most elegant of all. In fact, the pine tree is the king among Japanese garden trees.
The majestic undulation of its trunk and the beauty of its green leaves evoke a sense of elegance and strength. This sake jar depicts a pine tree and a pair of cranes.

In fact, OTOSO is not just a New Year's drink. For Japanese people, it has the meaning of burying demons and getting rid of evil spirits. "The word 蘇"SO" has the meaning of awakening the soul, and when combined with 屠"TO" it means "to remove evil spirits and revive the spirit of life. In other words, it is thought to be useful in wishing for good health and longevity, and has spread as a celebratory drink during the festive New Year. Originally, the custom of drinking slaughterhouse sake at New Year's began in China, and it was introduced to Japan in the Heian period (794-1185), where it became an official New Year's event at the imperial court.
Maki-e is a technique in which pictures, patterns, and letters are drawn on the surface of lacquer ware using lacquer, and then metal powder such as gold or silver is "sprinkled" on the surface before it dries. It is a very gorgeous and time-consuming technique.
