Japanese antique 1900s Koimari indigo SHISHI Lion porcelain hexagonal incense burner with painting of dragon and phoenix H5.1×W5.1in/13×13cm.
Slightly flattened hexagonal porcelain incense burner with a lid of a lion. This type of pottery is called 古伊万里 Ko-Imari, one of the oldest kiln in Japan where potters from Korean peninsula introduced their techniques around 1610. Six sides have paintings of phoenix with arabesque patterns and dragon and jagged geometric patterns suggesting lightning. The two-dimensional representations of phoenixes and dragons and the lion sculptures are unified in a harmonious atmosphere. While old Imari porcelain is valued by collectors for its brushwork and exquisite shades of blue, this incense burner beautifully exemplifies both qualities
