Japanese antique 1900s 輝方 sign brush watercolor hand painting scroll Mothers and Children, KAKEJIKU H47.2in/H120cm.

This is the work of a painter active during the Meiji and Taisho periods.
He was Terukata (1883-1921), a Japanese painter who won many awards, partly because of his mother, who was a painter. He specializes in paintings of beautiful women and landscapes.

Mothers gather at the seaside for tidal flats. It is one of the annual summer events in Japan, and this scene shows them gathering shellfish in the sand in the shallows.
Children playing sumo near the beach are also depicted in this scene. If you look closely, you can see the top of Mt.
This is one of those scenes that do not change with the times. The innocence of the children is expressed in a cute way.
The surrounding cover was later redone, and the painting is in beautiful condition, although there are some blotches, scuffs and scratches due to age.

These are called kakejiku, or hanging scrolls, and are calligraphy or oriental paintings on silk or paper.
In Japan, masters keep a variety of kakejiku. They hang picture scrolls that represent the seasons and calligraphy that expresses feelings or messages to guests.
They can also be rolled up for compact storage.
