This mirror was made during the early Edo period, around the 17th or 18th century.
The inscription has been worn away considerably, but the words "Hitomi Fujiwara Shigetsugu" can still be faintly read. This was made by a mirror caster active in Kyoto from the late 17th century onwards.
A distinctive feature is the depiction of young pine trees growing on this mountain. This is said to be a design with a slight sense of perspective that was popular in the late 17th century. The phoenix flying in the distance also adds an elegant touch.
Until the Edo period, all mirrors in Japan were made of bronze, with the polished side decorated with embossed patterns, designs, or lettering on the other side.
The history of human-faced mirrors is long, and in both the East and the West, mirrors were frequently used for ceremonial purposes and were highly valued.
This mirror was made after such ceremonial mirrors began to be used for general practical purposes. In Japan, they are called hand mirrors. This style has been around since the Muromachi period, and the older the mirrors, the smaller they are. This is because, as Edo prospered, courtesans' hairstyles became more flamboyant, increasing demand for mirrors that provided a wider field of view, and mirrors therefore became larger. By this time, mirrors were no longer held in the hand, but were attached to a pedestal.
This mirror is quite old and is the size of the time when mirrors were still held in the hand, so it is thought to have been worn by a woman.
Although it has rusted and discolored over the years, it can be said to be a work of art that has been created with the passage of time.

It would look great hanging on the wall or placed on a pedestal.
