Japanese Makie Lacquer box with Long-tailed bird gold urushi EDO 1800s

This box is called a sutra box, originally crafted to hold precious sutras and books. Made of wood and lacquer, its lid features elaborate and delicate paintings on both the inside and outside, created using the maki-e technique. The eye is drawn to the bird with its long tail. It is beautifully rendered in exquisite detail, slightly three-dimensional, using gold and silver. The bird perches atop a design featuring the triple tomoe crest, often used on drums at shrines and said to ward off evil spirits.
The underside of the lid is decorated with Mount Fuji and a pine forest below.
This box is very old, dating from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. While there are numerous signs of repairs on the corners and such, there is no damage that affects its usability.
