Japanese Antique 1800s Black Lacquered Box elongated shape Wood craft for GEISYA hairpin black with SAMURAI crest H16.5×W3.9in/H42×10cm

This is a box made in the late Edo period to hold a large naga kanzashi. It is made of wood and painted in black lacquer with a golden family crest.

This family crest is called “Maru ni Tsuta Mon” (ivy crest on a circle) and is based on the motif of ivy leaves. Ivy is a vine deciduous tree of the grape family that grows on trees, rocks, and houses. It has long been favored as an ornamental tree because of its beautiful yellow flowers in summer and red leaves in autumn. Because of its aesthetic significance and lush growth, it came to be used as a family crest to wish for prosperity, especially by samurai families. It is also often seen as a female crest. The ivy crest is also famous as the crest of Hisahide Matsunaga and Takatora Todo, both warlords in the Warring States period, and is one of the ten major crests because of the large number of families that use it.
