Japanese 1920s URUSHI lacquer square tray OBON red urushi wooden tableware Tea ceremony OZEN 14.4×14.4in/36.5×36.5cm.

This is called お盆 Obon. It can also be used as a table. お膳 Ozen is used in Japanese cuisine when each dish is served on such a tray. Some types of ozen have legs, but this is a type without legs.
The size is large, and this is a high-class 輪島塗 Wajima-nuri product. The characteristic of Wajima-nuri is that the lacquer is applied very thickly, so it is painted over and over again, which makes it very durable and time-consuming. If you look closely, you can see that the bottom of the side side is slightly carved to make it easier to hold. This kind of casual effort is also an expression of the Japanese sense of beauty.
It is simple and beautiful, with no handle, so it does not interfere with the bowl or other objects on which it is placed.
