FINE! Set of 5 Japanese antique small Plates Dragons, Clouds, waves, porcelain 1890s Indigo Blue White hand painting IMARI 4.5in/11.5cm.
This is a set of five small porcelain plates made in the late Edo period.
The distinctive feature is the dragon depicted between the clouds and waves at the top and bottom of the center. Dragons are a very popular motif in Japan and Asia and are believed to bring good luck. All of them are hand-painted and never get boring to look at.
This pottery is called “古伊万里 Ko-Imari” or “染付 some-tsuke”
Imari ware is a type of porcelain produced in Arita, Japan, where potters brought the technique from the Korean Peninsula. Production began around 1610.
The back is inscribed with “大明成化年製 Daiming Chenghua Nensei,” which indicates that it was made during the reign of Emperor Chenghua of the Ming Dynasty in China (1465-1487). However, many ceramics were made in Japan during the Edo period with this inscription imitating the Chinese era name. Therefore, this plate was made during the Edo period.
Another interesting feature of this plate is that the rim is pleated in a three-dimensional pattern, and the edges are coated with a reddish-brown glaze called “beni.”
It comes in a wooden box and is recommended as a gift.
This plate is used in Japanese kaiseki cuisine.
It is also recommended for sashimi and other dishes.
These plates are also suitable for displaying accessories and other items. The condition is very good, and it is ready for immediate use.
