FINE! Set of 3 red gold lacquer MAKIE wooden sake cups with bards crane and turtles, Japanese Antique 1916s sakazuki urushi 4.9in/12.5cm.
This is a beautiful set of three cups made of wood and lacquer, gold.
This sake cup is decorated with cranes, turtles, and waves using a lacquer technique called 蒔絵maki-e.
The technique of maki-e is very high and excellent. Especially, the crane's wings are very realistic. The waves are also drawn on the reverse side, and are beautifully expressed with very delicate lines.
There is no major damage to any of them and they are ready to use.
This set was originally intended for weddings, events, and other celebratory occasions.
In Japan, drinking sake from a sake cup is called "sakazukigoto," and is meant to strengthen the bonds between people who are not related by blood.
The act of drinking together has been used in Japan since the Middle Ages to deepen unity. It was also used to unite revolts in Japan.
Basically, it is a courtesy to drink all the sake that is poured.
This design shows cranes and turtles. The crane, a symbol of longevity, has been loved in Japan since the Heian period (794-1185). Cranes are also a symbol of conjugal bliss, as they are very compatible with married couples and stay with them throughout their lives. For this reason, ceremonies are held at weddings and other occasions to share a cup of sake with such a design.
