A temple bell carried by a monk of the Shingon sect.
It is very old and delicately made. The sound is clear and beautiful. The design of the limbs is based on the motif of 金剛杵 Kongosho, which means having the power to shatter all things, and is thought to represent the Buddhist doctrine of bodhichitta (the mind seeking enlightenment) by shattering stubborn vexations.
There are 88 temples and numerous sacred sites along the way where Kobo-Daishi, the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, is said to have practiced. The inner parts have been repaired but are in good condition for use.
