Large! Japanese antique bronze vase with little lions from a buddhist temple with a signature, ikebana utensil 1800s H8.3×7.7in/H21×19.5cm.
These bronze vessels were displayed in pairs in front of the Buddha, the principal object of worship in temples. They originated in the Heian period (9th-12th century), when esoteric Buddhism was practiced. Graceful curves and proportions were paramount. After the Heian period, Buddhist altars became more intricately decorated.
The color of copper over time creates a cool atmosphere. The lions on both sides are also beautifully crafted. These can be easily removed. On the bottom is the maker's signature.
There is another exactly the same item on display.
