FINE! 1800s Japanese antique BIZEN vase old hand made ceramic jar flower vase with doll for tea ceremony Ikebana H5.3×5.3in/H13.5×13.5cm.
This is a Bizen Pottery Tokkuri made in the late Edo period. It is called “人形 ningyo/doll tokkuri” or “Heso/navel tokuri,” and is characterized by a concave center with a figure-like doll affixed to it. The dolls are based on the 布袋 Hotei (Hotei means “Seven Gods of Good Luck” in Japanese). This deity is believed to be especially beneficial for good fortune, fortune, and children.
The warm, rustic texture of the clay, created by firing at high temperatures without glaze, is unique to Bizen ware. This one has a very cool deep, almost black hue.
