EDO 1800s craft Japanese antiques set of 4 small plates fine porcelain ceramic dish Blue White relief pattern Butterfly KOIMARI H3.9in/10cm.
These are small plates made in the late Edo period in the area of Seto, Aichi Prefecture, using a technique called yokoku.
The pattern is beautifully expressed in a three-dimensional relief. The workmanship is not uniform, and there are irregularities in the glaze and subtle differences in color. Although the technique is not particularly sophisticated, it has a unique charm that cannot be found in modern items.
The pattern features a couple of butterflies depicted in relief at the center.
Since each piece is handmade, the shapes vary slightly. Some may have cracks in the glaze from the firing process or areas where the glaze did not fully cover the rim, but there are no major damages, and they are usable.
Enjoy the aged patina and the unique character of each piece.
These are called 豆皿mame-zara, and are often used for 懐石kaiseki cuisine in Japan. For example, pickles, condiments, etc. are placed on them. Japanese cuisine has a unique custom of serving dishes of different flavors on separate plates. This allows one to directly feel the flavor of each dish and ingredient. Another interesting aspect of Japanese food is that you can add your own condiments and other ingredients on the spot to create your own favorite taste.
Another use is to hold accessories and other items. These plates are very popular in Japan.
□ Size: H 1in × W 3.9in × D 2.8in (about H2.5cm×W10cm×D7cm )
□ Weight : 2.3oz (64g) ×4
□ Material : porcelain
condition...
It is in good condition, but there are small scratches and dirt due to aging. There are some chip, cracks in the glaze from the firing process, but there is no major damage and they are ready to use.
