BIG! Japanese furniture vintage hanging paper lantern for portable Candle holder for the shrine temple Kanji calligraphy H42.4in/H107.8cm

This is a type of lantern called as Odawara Lantern. It is made so that the paper and bamboo body can be stored inside the cylindrical shape formed by bending the thin pieces of wood at the top and bottom.

Although this type of lantern was often made for travel, this particular size is quite rare. This piece was preserved by a merchant family in Kanazawa. Because Kanazawa is a region with heavy rain and snow, it's likely that this lantern was specially ordered for its ability to be quickly folded and protected from sudden changes in weather.

This lantern was displayed in front of the entrances of merchant houses during shrine festivals to welcome the gods. A full-circle drawing on its surface depicts the curtains that surround the altar. Inside, a pair of paper markers, indicating the spot where the gods descend, are placed in a deep blue vessel on a stand. The crest on the back, featuring two overlapping leaves, is a family crest of a merchant house. It is modeled after oak leaves, which have a strong connection to Shinto shrines, as they were used from ancient times to hold offerings. Because the leaves do not fall until new buds appear in spring, the oak has long been cherished as a symbol of a family line that will never die out.

In spite of its age, there are a few small holes as shown in pictures.  A candle or a light can be put from a circle window, easily opened and closed, at the bottom
