BIG! RARE! Japanese furniture antique Jinmaku Noren linen curtain SAMURAI crest for battle field black and white 1700s Edo W310.2in/H788cm.
This item is called a 陣幕jinmaku. It was used as a curtain to form a battlefield position. It was also valued as a tool for creating a sacred space in samurai society.
This is a rare and wonderful item from the late 1700s. It is very large and should be used outdoors or in a very large space. It is made entirely of natural linen. The cloth is taut and has discoloration from age, but that is also cool. The indigo color of the natural dyeing is very beautiful, and the strings are also all dyed in natural colors.
Five large family crests are designed on it. This family crest is called "鷹の羽Taka no ha /hawk's feather. Hawks have attracted people since ancient times because of their beauty when flying in the sky and their bravery when chasing prey.
Falconry was especially popular among the upper class, and falcons were a type of animal that had a strong relationship with people.
Therefore, the falcon crest was popular not only among samurai families but also among upper class court nobles as a symbol of strength and authority, just as the image of the falcon has.
The name of a samurai named Yamori is dyed on the crest. This family was a retainer of the Abe family, which had a castle in present-day Hiroshima Prefecture.
The Fukuyama clan ruled the domain from 1619 to 1871.
