BIG! Japanese vintage wooden signboard for "EXCHANGE" shaped as a classical weight with calligraphy hand carved, Japanese antique H23.2in
Bank started as exchange in Edo era, the 16th century.
Government issued currencies as gold, silver and bronze, but people paid only by bronze in markets. Percentage of the gold or silver contain in medals changed depending on when they were issued. Exchange measured and authorized the value of medals and changed them to different medals. They used valance for this measurement and the weight turned to be a symbol for exchange.
This wood signboard was hanged from the edge of eaves of exchange shop.
Kanji "両替” as "exchange" were carved on both surfaces and its rim was trimmed.
A metal fitting on the top can be used for a hook.
