A masterpiece of artisanal skill:
This is a prestigious pure silk "inbanten" kimono, once worn by master carpenters and firefighters. A traditional family crest is boldly hand-dyed on the back. A continuous pattern is dyed into the underside. The Komochi Yoshiwara (child-holding Yoshiwara) pattern, originating from the Yoshiwara pleasure district of the Edo period, is a traditional pattern of connected, chain-like shapes with indented corners (known as "Yoshiwara Tsunagi"). Symbolizing connections between people and good relationships, it has long been used as a chic and auspicious pattern.

Design and the Aesthetics of "Iki":

Hidden Charm: The cuffs are lined with a contrasting faded light blue fabric. Fold the sleeves back to reveal this "inner tailoring," a symbol of the traditional Japanese aesthetic of "Iki."

Authentic Texture: Because this item is unused, the original firmness of the starch (stiffness) of the fabric is maintained. With repeated wear and washing, the indigo dye softens and develops the unique, beautiful "fading" characteristic of genuine antique cotton.

Modern Styling:
Today, this jacket has transcended its original purpose. Pair it with modern denim and a T-shirt to create a unique overcoat, or display it as wall art in a Japanese-inspired home.

Condition & Character:
Exceptional "New-Old-Stock" Condition. It has been preserved for over a century with incredible care. The fabric is still crisp and starched. The color is a very dark navy blue.
