People would boil water in iron kettles to add humidity to the dry air and warm their cold hands over the glowing embers. The Sumitori, filled with charcoal, was always kept by the Hibachi. When the fire grew low, it would be carried to the \"Doma\" (a traditional earthen-floor kitchen) where a large stock of charcoal was kept for refilling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth the interior and exterior are blackened with soot, creating an authentic antique atmosphere of a time-honored Japanese home.
