Pair of Japanese antique ink painting scroll Zen Monks 谷文晁, ink and wash hanging scroll Kakejiku with BOX 1900s Kanji sign H74.8in/H190cm.
This hanging scroll comes in a pair. Although the signature reads 谷文晁Tani Buncho, the painting was probably done by a disciple or other pupil of Tani Buncho or someone and is not his own work.
However, the unique composition and the striking close-up of the face make them unique. The discoloration from age has created a cool atmosphere.
Tani Buncho was one of the most popular painters of the Edo period and ran his own private school. The artist's details are unknown, but the painting itself dates from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era. The surrounding silk and other materials used for the mounting have been renewed since then.
The painting is boldly hand-drawn in black ink on paper.
The subject of this painting is called Kanzan Jitokuzu (寒山拾得図), which is often used as a motif in Zen. The motif of this painting is the monks Kansan and Jitoku. These two monks from the Tang Dynasty in China were known for their eccentricities and were called incarnations of Monju and Fugen. Whether they even existed is a mystery, and many Japanese and Chinese painters have depicted them.
The paper itself has stains, wrinkles, and small holes. However, as a whole, it is clean and can be immediately displayed and enjoyed. It comes in its original wooden box.
This is called KAKEJIKU a hanging scroll, and is a calligraphy or oriental painting on silk or paper.
In Japan, masters store various types of hanging scrolls. And he hangs a drawing scroll which represents the season and calligraphy scrolls which implies his feelings or message to his guests.
Another good point is that it can be rolled up and stored compactly.
