Japanese Vintage Lacquer hexagonal tray wooden Reddish brown brand Kanji calligraphy, 春慶 shunkei for Tea ceremony tray W12in/30.6cm

This lacquerware is a craft item called ”春慶 Shunkei", which is made in the mountainous area of Gifu Prefecture. The base made of wood is colored red or yellow, and then covered with particularly transparent lacquer.　While Japanese lacquerware is often black or red, this lacquer craft, where the wood grain shows through, gives a rustic and warm impression.

This hexagonal tray is rare. The branding mark suggests it was specially commissioned by a master of the tea ceremony  for serving sweets at a tea ceremony. It also bears a second kanji branding, which signifies celebration or good fortune.

The tray's size is perfect for immediate use; it's just large enough to hold a complete set of tea utensils—a teabowl, tea caddy, scoop, and whisk—or for elegantly serving sake ware.
