The variety of colors within a single piece is a joy to behold. The reddish brown or grayish clay body has a beautiful natural gradation. It is recommended for decorating flowers or as a bottle for holding alcohol. It comes in a wooden box, making it ideal as a gift.
Not only the color variation but also the rough surface texture is interesting. This is called ash-covering.
It is fired in a climbing kiln, on the floor just below the fire opening, buried in embers. The lower surface in contact with the floor has a natural cleft, while the upper surface is covered with mussed, half-melted ash that sticks to the surface like the skin of an enoki tree. Only a few pieces from a single kiln are this fine and unscathed.

備前Bizen ware is a type of pottery produced in Okayama Prefecture.
From the Kofun Period (mid 3rd century to 7th century) to the Heian Period (794 to 1185), the roots of Bizen Pottery, called Sue ware, were scattered throughout the prefecture. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), brown pottery, as we know it today, began to be fired. The firing method allows sufficient oxygen to enter the kiln, resulting in a warm color. The natural beauty of the clay is beautiful because it is fired hard without glaze. Another reason for its popularity is that the color changes in the kiln, and no two pieces are alike. It is said that the more the potter uses it, the more the color will change and become more durable.
