Japanese Furniture vintage byobu 結界Boundary partition for tea ceremony / folding screen Furo-saki check pattern H21.5×W33.5in/H54.5×W85cm.

This is a type of tea ceremony utensil and is called a 風炉先屏風 furo-saki byobu.
The pattern, called a 一松模様 Ichimatsu /checkered pattern, is designed with square blocks of two beautiful, slightly dull metallic colors. This pattern has the meaning of "eternity" and "prosperity" because of its endless image.
If you look closely, you can see that the wood is assembled to fit together without metal fittings, allowing for a hinge-like opening and closing motion. It is a wonderful technique and beautiful.

It is a low divider folded in two. The design varies, but it is said that it is basically used as a background to accentuate the wind furnace, kettle, and other utensils placed in front of it. They are also used for practical purposes, such as dividing space or as a windbreak when the tea ceremony is held outside.
In Japan, folding screens and boundaries are sometimes placed to divide a space in this way. 結界Kekkai also have a meaning of protecting a sacred space.
It is recommended to use it not only as a tea ceremony utensil, but also as a background for pots and ornaments on chests of drawers and so on.
