Japanese antique hanging scroll, 将軍 SHOGUN SAMURAI ink watercolor painting hand painting with signature stamp, Kanji box H72.8in/H185cm.

This is called 掛け軸KAKEJIKU a hanging scroll.
In Japan, masters store various types of hanging scrolls. And he hangs a drawing scroll which represents the season and calligraphy scrolls which implies his feelings or message to his guests.
Another good point is that it can be rolled up and stored compactly.

This is the motif “将軍 Shogun” 徳川家光 Tokugawa Iemitsu. The details of who painted it are unknown. The silk cloth around it has become beautiful with age.
Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651) was the third shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the one who solidified the governmental system established by his grandfather, Tokugawa Ieyasu. He succeeded as shogun in 1623 and governed the Edo Shogunate for about 28 years. Iemitsu introduced the sankin-kotai system, which strengthened the control over the daimyo (feudal lords) and stabilized the authority of the shogunate. He also advanced the policy of national seclusion (sakoku), restricting Japan’s foreign relations. His reign ensured the peace and stability that defined the Edo period.
