These ceramic bowls called "Koimari, old imari ware" were made in the 19th century, Edo period. These bowls with lids are primarily used in kaiseki cuisine, for serving warm dishes, typically soups. This bowl is designed for enjoying the aroma of the dish as it rises with the steam when the lid is lifted.
These are hand-painted in a single shade of blue with motifs of various plants, along with butterflies. Chrysanthemums are often simplified due to their numerous petals, but in this case, they are rendered with striking volume, expecially on the top of the lid.
Two of the five bowls each have one chip on the rim and one on the foot, all of which have been repaired with kintsugi , gold lacquer repair.
