This beautiful, old hanging lantern was once hung in Buddhist temples. It was usually hung around altars housing large Buddha statues or in corridors. It was made around the Meiji period.
It is delicately carved from copper and looks even more beautiful when lit.
The shade of this lantern is modeled after a lotus flower, which appears to float when viewed from above. The gold has turned black with soot, and the discolouration that occurs over time is very stylish.
Delicate designs based on nature, such as arabesques and cloud patterns, are used throughout.
The two windows can be opened and closed, allowing you to place candles or LED lights inside.
