Japanese vintage God Lion Shishi large statue ceramic ornament sculpture KOMAINU 高山Takayama(1943~) H10.6in/H27cm.
The large guardian dog statues made of this pottery are bold and impressive.
It was created by Mie Prefecture ceramic artist 高山Hikaru Takayama (1943~). He usually makes vases, tea sets, and jars, but this is a rare piece. The artist's name is engraved on the back.
狛犬Komainu Lion are often seen in Japan at the entrances of temples and shrines and by the main shrine.
This lion is considered a guardian deity in Buddhism.
It is rare to find such a guardian dog statue made of pottery. It is interesting because it has both a uniquely generous and rugged appearance.
There is a drip of glaze around the shoulder.
It is in good condition with no major damage.
